Save the teenager, save the world.

Who doesn't love a story where the young adult learns to harness the mysterious skill within themselves and so save the world?

Or their part of it at least.

Then again, there's the story where the young protagonist has to save themselves. Physically, emotionally, mentally. Once they can do this, the world looks better.

They grow up.

Is it good that the world looks better to them. Have things actually improved around them?

In genre fiction, it's the world they save. In mainstream fiction, it's themselves.

It's just something I thought I'd think about.
