Wendy N Wagner shows us an interesting world in "Cold Iron and Green Vines". This is a world where people wear iron to protect themselves from the Hinkypinks. In fact, they fear these creatures so much that they even swap their bodies of flesh for those of wicker and steam. The narrator is a young girl who is just coming into the power she inherited from her mother. There's more I would say about her mother, but that would involve spoilers.
Instead, I will just say that I particularly loved the beginning as a fine piece of writing. It has tension, sets the scene and gives the 'reveals' in a beautifully timed way - that's the writer side of my brain talking: The reader side was simply charmed.
