Over at Escape Pod you can read or listen to "Clockwork Fagin", a short story by Cory Doctorow read by Grant Baciocco.
Sian is an amputee at Grinder's workhouse. There are a lot of amputees there because so many children fall into the computer works of this steampunk world. Grinder fools the kindly, but stupid, sisters of St Agatha, keeps the goods they send for himself, and sends the children out to beg. Then, one day, Monty shows up.
Monty brings in a new order to things, but the children have to be clever if they are to get away with it. Fortunately, they have a lot of skills from their days as computer children, and they use these not to play games but to improve their lives.
This story is described as Dickensian, which it is. Grinder and his workhouse is like a cross between the orphange and Fagin's gang in Oliver Twist, with some steampunk touches added.
It's a bit of fun, and you can find it here at Escape Pod 315.
